Nyungwe Forest National Park – Activities & How to get there

Nyungwe Forest National Park is located south west of Rwanda it is bordered with Rwanda-Burundi border in the south.  This park was established in 20004 and is endowed with a whole lot of natural beauties inclusive of which is the oldest mountain forest in east Africa.

Nyungwe forest is also perfectly located and by far the most preserved forest that offers you amazing activities that include, birding activities canopy walks, monkey tracking, chimpanzee trekking, hiking in the forest. How to get there.

By Bus. You can travel to Nyungwe national park by road through using a bus from Nyabugogo Bus Park which will take you quiet some long time. 

By car. You could also travel by road by hire a car to Nyungwe forest national a park which will take as shorter time and will also allow you sight of amazing landscapes and not forgetting the hospitable locals of the country.

By Air: you can also travel to Nyungwe forest by air which will take the shortest time and you will have less fatigue if you can afford it.

Activities to engage in while in Nyungwe Forest National Park.

Chimpanzee trekking is the most prominent in this national park. For one to engage in it comes with the beauty of viewing the cousins to the gorillas the chimpanzees as they play feed and interact with each other while in their home. This activity starts early in the morning and one is required to dress appropriately for the trek for example dress up on along sleeved shirt tracking boots rain coat a hat .be reminded to carry enough drinking water for yourself since the trek will be strenuous and packed lunch since long hours maybe spent in the forest groups of 8 people are allowed to trek. And briefing is required early morning g before you penetrate the forest.

Hiking in the forest. This park tends to have a lot of trails some of which 130kilometres through the forest, you can also explore the ancient rainforest as you discover a lot of habitants found in this forest. These private walks /hikes can take you from one hour to like 8 hours depending on your fitness and how good you can explore the forest. You will be insight of some wildlife, bird species in the forest, butterflies, flowers, forest trees among others.

The canopy walk is also takes about 2 hours in the forest and mainly starts from Nyungwe park headquarters while you engage in this activity you are insight of east fracas largest and oldest afro montane forest.in the start of the activity you will walk through the forest as you view the thick montane and its amazing tree species you will also see other primates like the blue monkey black and white colobus the L’hoest monkey red tailed monkey among others.

Monkey Tracking which is favoured by the 13 monkey species in the forest namely L’ Hoest’s monkey, the Owl faced monkeys, Mona monkey and the blue monkeys, gray cheeked and the Colobus monkeys.

Birding in Nyungwe forest since the forest habours about 300 bird species, 27 of which are endemics as well as part of the many species found in the forests of the Albertine rift.
