Uganda vs Rwanda: Which Gorilla Trekking Destination Is Right for You?

Both countries offer genuinely excellent gorilla trekking, and the differences come down to trade-offs rather than one being simply better than the other.

Uganda's Bwindi holds roughly half the world's mountain gorillas across several habituated families, with a wider range of trek lengths and difficulty depending on where a family is that day. It's usually the more affordable option, and pairs naturally with Uganda's wider wildlife circuit — Queen Elizabeth, Murchison Falls, Kibale — in one trip.

Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park is closer to its capital, Kigali (about 2.5–3 hours by road versus Bwindi's longer transfer from Kampala), and treks are generally shorter and less physically demanding on the whole, though this varies by family. It's typically the pricier permit of the two, and pairs well with a short Kigali city visit.

Combining both is genuinely possible — Kisoro (Uganda's southwestern gorilla gateway) and Kigali are a manageable road connection, so some travelers trek in both countries on one trip rather than choosing.
